Classes surchargées, manque de professeurs et de moyens, coût des études, mais aussi journées jugées trop longues et emplois du temps trop chargés : les revendications sont nombreuses.

Certaines mobilisations ont également donné lieu à des blocages, des dégradations et parfois de violents affrontements, faisant progressivement passer le débat des revendications étudiantes à la question des méthodes utilisées.

À cela s'ajoute désormais la récupération politique. À gauche comme à droite, et particulièrement aux extrêmes, chacun tente d'imposer sa lecture du mouvement : soutien aux manifestants d'un côté, dénonciation des violences et de l'instrumentalisation de l'autre. Au point que les revendications de départ deviennent parfois difficiles à distinguer au milieu de l'affrontement politique.
